Hints and Tips for searching

A Few Well-Chosen Words

Search engines keep track of every word on each page in the freshest catalogue on the Web. That's a lot of information, so you can improve your search results by being specific. For example, if you're thinking of searching for information on the Catholic church , you'll likely get more than you bargained for if you simply type the word "religion" into the search box and click the "Find" button. Instead, you'll be looking at the Vatican sooner if you phrase your search like this: When searching, consider what words you might use to describe a subject if you were a webmaster. Sometimes, subtle differences can have a dramatic impact on your search results. Consider these two examples: Education magazine and Education magazines Both searches will point you toward websites that list education magazines on and off the Web. However, the first example (with the word "magazine" singular) will also return many sites devoted to individual publications near the top of the search results. That might not be what you want. If you're looking for sites that list many education magazines, the second example will get you there faster.

Operators in the search string

You have also the possible to include operators directly in the search string. This possibility allows it to be highly specific and therefore improves your search results.. Instead of typing in search words separated by blanks you may also apply operators or quotation marks to signal "the exact phrase": e.g. "St Thomas More Primary School" You wouldn't know it by browsing the Web, but they still publish magazines that have nothing to do with computers. If you wanted to find information on magazines other than those related to computers, search engines can help you do that. Use the minus (-) command in front of any word or phrase to screen out that term. e.g. Magazines - Computer.

Requiring Words (+)

The opposite of banning terms from your search results is requiring that certain terms show up in the documents search engines find. Use the plus (+) command to identify "must-have" words or phrases: E.g. Magazines + Educational

E-mail Sending

1.Open Outlook Express Start > Programs > Internet Explorer > Outlook Express.

2.On the upper toolbar click the compose message button. You will see this screen.

4. Then type a subject in for your e-mail this is recommended because some people receive many e-mails and may only open those with a subject. 5. Type in the text you wish to send, you can use the clipboard to paste pictures in by highlighting the picture in another program and pressing Ctrl+C, then going into the e-mail main window and pressing Ctrl+V.

6. Check your e-mail.

7.Send your E-mail by clicking on the send button in the top Left Hand Corner.

8. If you were not on-line when you pressed the send button Open Outlook Express Start > Programs > Internet Explorer > Outlook Express. when you are next on-line and click on the button marked send and receive.

Trouble Shooting

Software

If you are experiencing a lack of performance in any of the components of the solution, Editing or Browsing it may be due to one of the following.

1) Internet explorer and Microsoft front Page Express require quite large amounts of RAM and Video Ram. A card with less than 2MB of Video Ram may struggle especially on systems with less than 16 Mb of ram. To improve performance you could try reducing the resolution and the number of colours windows displays. To do this access the Control Panel Display box and the Settings Tab, try reducing the colour palette and Desktop area. If your display is flickering click on the advanced Properties button and change the refresh rate to optimal.

2) Ensure that you are not running any other tasks or applications unless they are necessary. Running other programs may seriously impact on the amount of resources available to the solution's programs. To close down unnecessary programs press Ctrl+Alt+Del simultaneously this will bring up the close program box. Close all the programs that you are not using and system should speed up.

Search Engines

I search for something but no answers or relevant sites are provided. What has happened?

1) Search words were not found. Please check your spelling or search again using different words (nouns and verbs).

2)There is nothing about this subject on the internet, unlikely but it occasionally happens. For getting the most out of search engines see the tutorial 'how do I use a search engine ?'

Internet errors

I try to log on to the site but it says 'Error HTTP 404 file not found' what has happened?

1) The RMNET server has crashed temporarily, try logging on later or just repeating the log in procedure.

2) The address you typed in is incorrect make sure the address bar reads http://www.rmplc.co.uk/eduweb/sites/stthomasmore/index.htm or alternatively use the home button on the top of the browser which should return you to this site.
