Scotland Under Threat

SCOTLAND, one of the oldest nations in the world, has made a massive contribution to mankind in many fields, particularly science, industry and health. Her people have been to the fore in setting up democratic governments all over the world.

Many Scots lost their lives fighting for American Independence. A Scot, Alexander Hamilton, helped write the American Constitution and a great many Scots were involved in making the USA the country it is today.

Similarly, Scots took a leading part in the exploration and then bonding together of Canada. Alexander MacDonald and George Brown were two of the founding fathers of the Canadian Confederation. For its first 24 years the Dominion of Canada had Scots as its Prime Ministers.

But today there is no Scottish Parliament. Ihe USA has its State Legislatures and Canada has its Provincial Parliaments, but even within the United Kingdom Scotland is denied its own voice.

The Scots, election after election, have voted for a Scottish Parliament. However London, just as it denied the early Americans their Home Rule, denies the modern Scots the privilege of governing themselves. In 1979 the London Government held a referendum asking Scots if they wanted their own Parliament within the United Kingdom. Although a majority voted for a Scottish Parliament, London again denied the Scots.

We send representatives to the London Parliament where there are 524 English MPs to 72 Scottish, 38 Welsh and 17 Irish MPs. With this unfair advantage, when it comes to a choice of priorities the English majority always wins,

Day by day the Scottish identity and way of life is being undermined and eroded. Scottish history, although so rich in its achievement, is almost non-existent in our own schools. Our children are taught British history which in effect means English history. Our people will soon not know where they have come from.

Our goal is to gain Independence within the European Community and be like all the other normal, small countries who are prospering in Europe, free to negotiate as equals.

The Scottish National Party are gaining strength but we need help from all those who believe in equality and freedom, some no doubt who have had the benefit of Scottish assistance and sacrifice in achieving independence for their own country.

This help will be used to re-establish one of the world's oldest nations to its rightful place.
