Heracles Tricks Titan

Heracles arrived back in Tiryns yesterday after completing his eleventh task, which was to get the golden apples of the Hesperides. The Hesperides are the daughters of the Titan, Atlas. Their garden is at the western end of the world.

After many months of travelling Heracles came to the garden but the wall around it was too high to scale. He asked Atlas, the giant who holds up the sky if he would get them for him. The giant said he would get the apples if Heracles would hold up the sky. Atlas came back with the golden apples but had enjoyed his freedom so much that he said he would take the apples to Eurystheus himself.

"I had to think quickly," Heracles told us. "I pretended that this idea was fine but I asked Atlas to hold the sky while I took his lionskin off to use as a pad for my shoulders. Atlas agreed and the trick worked! Giants may be incredibly strong but they are none too bright!"

Heracles holds up the heavens

Heracles picked up the apples and ran off leaving old Atlas cursing his name. He sailed back to Tiryns where Eurystheus gladly accepted the golden apples. Even so, our hero can expect his last labour to be the hardest of all!
